Dialysis
Dialysis is a procedure that cleans blood when the kidneys are not functioning properly, removing waste products and excess fluid. It’s a type of renal replacement therapy, meaning it takes over some of the functions of the kidneys. Dialysis is needed when the kidneys are unable to filter blood effectively, which can happen due to various reasons, including kidney disease or damage.

- Hemodialysis:This is the most common type, where blood is filtered outside the body using a machine and dialyzer (artificial kidney).
- Peritoneal Dialysis:This type uses the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum) as a filter, with fluid exchanged through a catheter in the abdomen.
- End-stage kidney disease: When kidneys have lost most of their ability to function.
- Severe kidney damage: From conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or lupus.
- Hemodialysis:Blood is pumped from the body through a dialyzer machine, where it is cleaned and returned to the body.
- Peritoneal Dialysis:Dialysate solution is introduced into the abdominal cavity, where it absorbs waste and excess fluid. This solution is then drained out.
- Dialysis helps manage the symptoms of kidney failure, such as fatigue, nausea, and swelling.
- It helps maintain life for many individuals with kidney failure until a kidney transplant becomes available or they are able to manage their condition effectively.
